As grids become strained by increased demand, extreme weather, and aging infrastructure, the potential for power outages grows. And in an era where even brief power interruptions can cost utilities, municipalities, and businesses millions in damages, energy storage has been identified as a critical tool in isolating parts of the grid or creating backup power caches to help minimize the impact of blackouts or brownouts. Strategic placement of mid-duration storage technologies can support either the overall power grid or individual essential facilities, like wastewater plants or hospitals—but only if those BESS solutions are themselves able to withstand the many stresses being put on our energy ecosystem.

02. Easing upgrade efforts

Nations, states, and corporations are dedicating more and more resources to reducing reliance on fossil fuels to generate value, cut costs, meet ESG commitments, and keep climate-related goals on track. As the shift to clean energy accelerates, the global energy infrastructure will require significant upgrades and modifications to accommodate new ways for energy to be generated, stored, and distributed. Mid-duration energy storage can support this critical transition by providing backup power and stored energy when supply from sections of the grid is interrupted due to modernization, repairs, or decommissioning. And the best BESS solutions for these applications? Those that require minimum time and resources from already over-stretched teams.

03. A non-wire alternative

When renewable energy sources are added to the grid, excesses may build up if intermittent production causes supply to outpace demand. But existing infrastructure is often unable to handle these spikes in volume, and utilities and power providers are then forced to waste vast amounts of generated energy through curtailments, or risk significant damage to the grid. Installing more conventional wires, poles, and substations to proactively address the issue is expensive and time consuming, so mid-duration, intra-day BESS solutions are increasingly being considered as viable non-wire alternatives—that is, when they can demonstrate a clear advantage from an implementation and operational perspective.

That’s exactly where our Eos storage systems shine. Like conventional lithium-ion batteries, our solutions can offload excess power from the grid when production exceeds demand, and then discharge it back to the grid when production dips and demand picks back up. But our zinc-based Znyth battery technology doesn’t require HVAC or flow pump systems, so systems like our containerized Eos Cube are simple to install and maintain. And it’s highly tolerant of operational changes, allowing each system’s discharge duration and depth to be reset on a cycle-by-cycle basis to flexibly match fluctuating supply and demand. Plus, scaling up capacity can be as easy as stacking a new Cube on top of or alongside an existing one.
